Helmets Come in Many Different Shapes and Sizes! The most important part of your safety gear is the helmet. The first thing to think about is what type of riding are you going to do most? There are basically three different types of helmets to choose from, each geared for a different riding style. From the basic line of protection to a full line of defense, all designed to protect your head. No matter what type of helmet you use, it is always important to find a helmet that meets Department of Transportation (DOT) safety ratings. This rating will be displayed on the back of the helmet if the product meets the rating. You may also find a more rigourous test from the SNELL foundation.
The 1/2 helmet is great for basic, slow riding speeds and utility work. This helmet offers the least amount of protection but is the most affordable type. 1/2 helmets offer the greatest peripheral vision and block the least amount of sound, but they are also the least protective.
The 3/4 helmet will protect your head better without losing peripheral vision, however it also will be harder to hear with this type of helmet. This helmet would be good for medium duty riding and utility work.
The full faced helmet will offer the greatest amount of protection for your head however it will restrict your visibility and hearing. This type of helmet is suggested for trail / race riding use.
