Pit and Pit Bike Requirements PDF Print E-mail

More and more often NMI is seeing the use of pit bikes by both racers and promoters alike. Unfortunately, not all users treat these machines as motorized vehicles and thus, a set of rules had to be created and implemented in order to keep participants and those in the pits safe. Keep in mind, pit bike offences are serious. Death or severe injury has resulted from misuse of these machines.

Here are the requirements for pit bike use in all NMI insured events. Pit bikes are classified as any machine used for transportation in the pit area (including ATV’s, motorized scooters, and pocket bikes). It is encouraged that you print and hand out this document to everyone who signed the pit waiver. Violators will be escorted off the premises without refund!

1. Users must have a full gear on during use (NO EXCEPTIONS!)

Participant minimum safety requirements include but are not limited to:

  • DOT approved helmets with chin strap properly fastened
  • Eye protection
  • Long sleeve shirts, pants and over the ankle boots
  • No alcohol or drug consumption before or during the event

2. Pit traffic is limited to under 10mph (5mph preferred)

3. Pit bike users are not allowed to have passengers unless the vehicle is designed for it (designed with separate footpegs, seat etc.)

4. All pit bikes must have the registered number of the racer on them so officials knows what team it belongs to

5. No alcohol consumption before or during the event (yes, even for pit bike users!)

6. Racing in the pit area is not allowed

7. No one under the age of 16 is allowed to operate a motorized vehicle in the pits

Anyone who sees a pit bike violation should report it to an event official immediately. Please help keep our events safe for everyone to enjoy. If these vehicles can not be used responsibly, we will require only non-motorized vehicles for pit use.

Crew Vehicle Use-

Officials must set an example for everyone. Helmets need to be worn by promoters, track crew, and anyone else working an event if they are using pit vehicles. No exceptions are allowed.
